Ironically, this article proclaiming its identification of a “new” phenomenon shares its exact title—and much of its argument—with a work from 50 years ago. In 1974, Arnold Forster and Benjamin Epstein of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) published the book The New Anti-Semitism, warning of a novel form of anti-Jewish animus emerging from the left, and singling out particular groups, such as Arabs and Black Americans. Their argument conflated anti-Zionism and antisemitism. In the intervening years, over a dozen books and articles with “new antisemitism” in their title have been published. The main argument is consistent: there is a new increase in antisemitism, which has a new source—leftist social movements. Typically, the concept is revived each time Israel’s repression of Palestinians leads to another wave of international criticism: For instance, texts on the “new antisemitism” proliferated around the turn of the millennium after Israel’s reprisals following the Second Intifada prompted a global outcry and a fresh mobilization of diasporic Jewish dissent.

Despite this long history, each time, pieces like Feldman’s present the “new antisemitism” as though the term has just been coined. Indeed, they barely quote or acknowledge each other: Of pieces we reviewed on the “new antisemitism” by 40 different authors published since the turn of the 21st century, we found no references to the 1974 book. The result is a mystification of history and context—in this case, the “new antisemitism” conceals its own genealogy as a concept and thereby constructs a sense of urgency. It depends, as well, on other ahistorical accounts, such as the omission of the longstanding tradition of the anti-Zionist Jewish left. In this worldview, history is being constantly restarted, and leftist movements are posited as an ever-emerging threat.

This kind of attempt to ahistorically cast a dynamic as “new” is a common feature of a “moral panic,” a phenomenon long theorized by scholars. In fact, much of the “new antisemitism” conversation maps onto the classic features of a moral panic. The sociologist Stanley Cohen, who articulated the first theory of “moral panics” in the late 1960s, summarized their main elements in the introduction to the 2002 third edition of Folk Devils and Moral Panics:

They are new (lying dormant perhaps, but hard to recognize; deceptively ordinary and routine, but invisibly creeping up the moral horizon)—but also old (camouflaged versions of traditional and well-known evils). They are damaging in themselves—but also merely warning signs of the real, much deeper and more prevalent condition. They are transparent (anyone can see what’s happening)—but also opaque: accredited experts must explain the perils hidden behind the superficially harmless (decode a rock song’s lyrics to see how they led to a school massacre).

The discourse around the “new antisemitism” shares this three-part structure. First, the theory’s proponents acknowledge that antisemitism has a long history as a mode of hatred and discrimination. Yet there is an explicit attempt to present it as new, modifying its meaning so it can be specifically marshaled to support the Israeli state. Secondly, this “new antisemitism,” the argument goes, is bad in itself, but it is also a warning sign of other social ills—most of all, of the dangerous radicalization of the left, and of the impending rise of other forms of hate. And, finally, the rise of antisemitism is posited as self-evident, clear for anyone to understand; yet the source of antisemitism is presented as opaque, such that expert analysts of the “new antisemitism” are required to reveal the purported threats of left-wing movements.

Now appearing nowhere else before in this sorry story: Cricket, the puppy, was dangerous, a threat to her children, and to livestock. Excuse me, it wasn’t dangerous, rather, it was extremely dangerous. My mistake. Anyhoo, as a result, Kristi, bravely took this danger, er…, extremely dangerous pup, er…, working dog, to the gravel pit, where she faced the demon and blasted it back to the hell from whence it came.

At last, the truth comes out and our national nightmare is over.

Regarding lab-grown meat:

There can be no good argument against eating it if people want to eat meat but object to killing animals. The party of “freedom” has no business telling other people what they can eat, especially something that harms no one to produce.

It’s no different from the people suing over soy milk being called milk, or Impossible Burger being called burgers.

People always complain that vegans are trying to force our way of life on others, but the opposite is actually true. There are no places in America where meat is banned, but there are places where meat substitutes are.

Cool cool cool:

An officer entering Columbia University’s Hamilton Hall Tuesday evening to break up a pro-Palestinian demonstration fired his gun inside the hall, in an incident that is now under review by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office a spokesperson confirmed Thursday evening.

The gun fired did not appear to be aimed at anyone and no one was injured, said Doug Cohen, a spokesperson for Bragg’s office, who said the office’s Police Accountability Unit is reviewing the shooting, which it does as a matter of policy.

Cohen said no students and only police officers were in the immediate vicinity when the shooting occurred.

In multiple television and radio appearances, as well as a press conference Wednesday morning, Mayor Eric Adams praised the NYPD’s “precision policing” and made no mention of the shooting.

Yes and that’s the point: their freedom axiomatically includes the right to remove options from other people and that is heroic and just.

I mean…deSantis is pretty much declaring that if you’re eating a burger you’re a hero fighting a sinister world conspiracy. Imagine how banal and self-involved you have to be to smear that much self-importance onto a mundane, if pleasurable, act.

This is even ideological, it’s just shared narcissism with a lobbying wing.

He didn’t break the record, but did it faster than anyone in a Tesla.

Paul Johnson, an ultra-runner and veteran, finished his route from LA to NYC this week, totaling 3,000 miles. He ran through parts of St. Charles County earlier this month.

Johnson raised $500,000 for the Team Red, White & Blue nonprofit organization, according to his Instagram page.

While in St. Charles County, several runners joined him for a distance along Route N Route N in Cottleville in windy and rainy conditions.

Johnson began on March 1 in Los Angeles with hopes of breaking the transcontinental record of 42 days, 6 hours and 30 minutes. He completed his route in 52 days, 2 hours and 29 seconds, according to his website.

As of 4:40 p.m. Thursday, the total has climbed to more than $$450,000.

“When we went in, we said, we will not let the headline of this day be ‘An American flag falls at UNC,’” said freshman Jason Calderon, who was one of several students who held up the flag Tuesday.

Mounted lights really only make sense on semi-auto shotguns imo. That’s the only use case where the pros outweigh the cons. Meaning the ergonomics aren’t screwed up and the lethal range at least more closely matches the distance the light will throw.

NBC actually had EIGHT, count ‘em, EIGHT people writing a story about how Trumpers won’t accept a Biden win, with cogent insight like:

Democrats “cheat like crazy,” said George Crosby, 72, a veteran from Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire. “I think they cheated before, and I think they’re going to try to do it again, because they’re a bunch of communists.”
and
Randall Minicola, 62, of Las Vegas, said it would be “impossible” for Biden to win.
“I don’t think he’s got a following. I mean, you look who’s behind him — the only thing he’s got is ghosts behind him.

and
Nancy Glawe, 45, a hospital worker from Tucson, Arizona, said, “There’s a few bubbles off center.” She voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020 but is supporting Robert F. Kennedy Jr. this year.
and
Asked why he doesn’t believe Biden can win fairly, Davis Green, a financial analyst from Salt Lake City, said, “Maybe it’s the bubble I’m in and the algorithm that I’m seeing.”

And on and on. They talked to FIFTY of these morons. Why?? Who the fuck knows. Big sigh. I’ll use the Yahoo link instead of making people go to NBC.

Well, these are council elections, not MP by-elections, so I’m thinking he might could hold off a confidence vote for a while. The next election has to be held by January 28, 2025.

It’s also worth noting that the Canadian prime minister will have to call elections by October 20, 2025. Right now Justin Trudeau and Pierre Poilievre are duking it out. To me, Poilievre has dragged Canada’s Conservative Party even further to the right than where Stephen Harper had it in 2015.

And then of course there’s our election. It has a fixed date, which is Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Be there or be square.

The bolded is exactly the reason why there are suggestions that Sunak could face a confidence vote as early as next week: These are the last major elections before the Tories have to call general elections, and thus a major barometer of voter approval. The Tories have been losing by-elections left and right for ages now, but each time they’ve waved away even shocking losses by insisting that voters will “come around” when general elections are called and there was plenty of time on the clock to win back key voters. And these elections are happening after two weeks of attempts by Sunak to move the needle by devoting one week to a publicity blitz of speeches about various proposals for a post-election Tory government and the passage of the Rwanda Scheme bill.

Basically, Sunak was brought in to help stem the bleeding after Truss’ mini-budget fiasco and the scandal-plagued mire that was the Johnson years, yet the party’s polling remains as dire as when Truss was sacked. If the party gets a shellacking at the polls today, then the argument that he needs to remain to keep the party afloat in the generals evaporates.

Poilievre It’s a trump type, take back our country, immigrants suck, no vaccines shithead populist. And all of his PPC (People’s Party of Canada) followers are trump level assholes.

Their signs are purple and I always say anyone putting a PPC sign in their yard is letting the neighborhood know that assholes live here.

His leading the PC (Progressive Conservatives - HA!) was exactly like trump taking over the GOP. AND because of how Canada voting works (you vote local and it rolls up) he could win.

It’s fucking terrifying.

Without wielding the gavel or holding a formal job laid out in the Constitution, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries might very well be the most powerful person in Congress right now.

The minority leader of the House Democrats, it was Jeffries who provided the votes needed to keep the government running despite opposition from House Republicans to prevent a federal shutdown.

Casual psychopathy and sociopathy on the scale of the modern Republican party still astound me. I feel like someday, decades down the road, we’re going to find out that there’s some previously-undiagnosed brain chemical imbalance or something that causes people to be… well, whatever current-day Republicans are. Not to give Republicans an excuse for being the shitty people that they are; people who suffer from biological mental problems are still responsible for acknowledging their wrong behavior and seeking treatment for the underlying cause. But it just boggles my mind that so many people willingly choose to be shitty human beings.

This is exactly what I think/hope as well.

The booming labor market is expected to extend a remarkable milestone in April, matching the last longest period of low unemployment on record.

Economists predict that the April jobs report, to be released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday morning, will show the unemployment rate holding at 3.8 percent, marking the 27th consecutive month of unemployment below 4 percent. This would match a low-unemployment period between 1967 to 1970, and close in on the longest period on record, between 1951 to 1953.

Apple shares climbed 7% in extended trading on Thursday after the iPhone maker reported fiscal second-quarter earnings that topped estimates and announced an expanded stock buyback program.

Apple announced that its board had authorized $110 billion in share repurchases, a 22% increase over last year’s $90 billion authorization. It’s the largest buyback in history, ahead of Apple’s previous repurchases, according to data from Birinyi Associates.

However, overall sales fell 4% and iPhone sales fell 10% year over year during the quarter, which Apple attributed to a tough comparison versus last year.

I hate Greenwich Nazis…

Hitler-saluting neo-Nazis descended on ritzy Greenwich, Conn. and chanted “heil” while doing a one-armed salute during a sickening display over the weekend.

Masked goons from the neo-Nazi group NSC-131 traveled from out of town Saturday to demonstrate outside Greenwich Town Hall, where they carried signs reading “New England is ours the rest must go,” and “Anti-whites FAFO” — with the acronym standing for “F**k around and find out.”

From there they marched in cargo-panted formation through downtown Greenwich, before posting up on a street corner with their vile banners while barking “Seig Heil,” flashing the Nazi salute, and leering at passersby.

another episode of the lying liars

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) claims in her new book that she once met with North Korea leader Kim Jong Un when she served in Congress, but the Dakota Scout says this story is almost certainly false.

“Noem served on the House Armed Services Committee from 2013-2015. During that period, committee members including Noem visited China in 2014. But there is no record of Kim being in China then. After assuming the role of supreme leader of North Korea in 2011, Kim did not leave North Korea until 2018.”

“That timeline, along with Kim’s preference to operate through proxies, makes Noem’s account nearly impossible.”

Auditors have deep understanding of tax law and application to specific facts involved. They have other tax experts who are involved in writing publications and rulings. Jerry Nehl Boylan, who faced up to 10 years in prison, was found guilty in 2023 of one federal felony count of misconduct or neglect of ship officer.

The fire erupted on the morning of Labor Day, when the boat was anchored near Santa Cruz Island, the largest of California’s Channel Islands, about 25 miles off the mainland.

US fighter jets allegedly scrambled to intercept Russian nuclear bombers that flew over Alaskan airspace.

US and Russian warplanes came face to face in the sky on Thursday after Vladimir Putin sent up two Tu-95MS nuclear bombers over the Bering Sea, near Alaska’s western coast.
Footage published by the Russian Defense Ministry shows a warplane from the Alaska Air National Guard marked with the letters AK and the number 304 on its tail fin. A Russian escort Su-30SM fighter jet is also pictured in the video.

The Russian defense minister admitted its hulking ‘Bear’ strategic bombers ‘appeared near the coast of Alaska’ on an 11 hour flight over the neutral waters Bering Sea. Moscow said ‘at certain stages the missile carriers were accompanied by fighter jets of foreign countries’.

Four Kremlin military jets were detected and tracked operating near American airspace in an area where Russian aircraft activity is regularly detected, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) confirmed Thursday. NORAD added that the Russian jets ‘remained in international airspace’.

This is the moment more than 100 Russian troops are believed to have been killed in an ATACMS tactical ballistic missile strike on occupied Luhansk.

A military training ground was seen being hit by multiple explosions typical of an ATACMS strike in footage captured by a drone flying high above.

The strike targeted a group of 100-plus soldiers who were seen in aerial images, say OSINT analysts in what would be the single largest loss of Russian stories in months.

United Methodist delegates on Thursday removed a 52-year-old declaration from their official social teachings that deemed “the practice of homosexuality … incompatible with Christian teaching” — part of a wider series of historic reversals of the denomination’s longstanding disapproval of LGBTQ activity.

The historic vote came as delegates also approved a new definition of marriage as a covenant between “two people of faith” while recognizing the couple may or may not involve a man and a woman. That replaces an exclusively heterosexual definition of marriage and followed a debate that exposed tensions between some U.S. and international delegates.

The 523-161 vote to approve a section of the church’s Revised Social Principles took place at the General Conference of the United Methodist Church in the penultimate day of their 11-day legislative gathering in Charlotte.

City officials declared a public health emergency Thursday after a tuberculosis outbreak left one person dead and nine others hospitalized.

Health officials said the outbreak stemmed from a group of people who stayed together at a Long Beach hotel room.

As of April 29, 14 cases of tuberculosis (TB) are associated with this outbreak — nine of them required hospitalization and one case was fatal.

Investigators said around 170 people have likely been exposed to the illness. Health officials are in contact with any guests or individuals who were at the hotel during the time the infected people were present.

A hydroelectric dam has collapsed in southern Brazil after days of heavy rains that triggered massive flooding, killing more than 30 people.

Officials say another 60 people are missing in Rio Grande do Sul state.

About 15,000 residents have fled their homes since Saturday. At least 500,000 people are without power and clean water across the state.

The burst dam triggered a two-metre (6.6ft) wave, causing panic and further damage in the already flooded areas.

The dam is located between the municipality of Cotiporã and the city of Bento Gonçalves.

The family of UAlbany student Alexa Kropf, 18, is by her side at Albany Medical Center. She is in critical condition after being hit by a speeding illegal dirt bike in Albany early Saturday morning.

Kropf’s parents got the emergency call this weekend that no family ever wants to get.

The freshman was due to come home next week. Now she’s in a medically induced coma. Her family is hoping police find the person responsible.

Video recorded by a student overnight Friday shows a police car arriving and a chaotic scene on Hudson Avenue in Albany.

A crowd of young people surrounded Kropf, of Long Island, who had just been hit.

A man speeding on an illegal dirt bike had been weaving in and out of groups of people in the road before he smashed into her, police said.

Speeding bikes and ATVs are a problem, according to students.

Trump was explicitly saying outside the courtroom yesterday that he was being unconstitutionally gagged by not being allowed to testify in his own defense. Blanche simultaneously nodded and shook his head at this - showing just how much of a suckup he was to Trump and incapable of stopping Trump’s overt lie.

Merchan made explicit that Trump can testify as per his constitutional right. He also has a right to remain silent where anything he says can and will be used in a court of law.

He will continue to refuse to shut the fuck up, and get himself in trouble.

A lot of world leaders across the ideological spectrum are underwater in approval polls, showing a global dissatisfaction with the state of affairs post-Covid. President Biden is doing fairly well in comparison, only 0.7% behind Trump in the 538 aggregate. And that is before the jury in Trump’s present case renders a verdict and the Biden Campaign begins saturation attacks on Trump in the swing states this Fall.

Exclusive: RFK Jr. Campaign Operative Charged With Assault For Allegedly Choking, Punching Woman

A key political operative on Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s presidential campaign was charged with assault after allegedly choking and punching a woman in New York early Saturday morning.

Trent Pool, who serves as a paid consultant on the long-shot independent campaign and has been leading the effort to get Kennedy on the ballot in all 50 states, was charged with assault and criminal obstruction of breathing.

According to an NYPD spokesperson, a little after 5 a.m. on Saturday morning Pool was engaged in a “verbal dispute” with a 25-year-old woman at the ritzy Soho Grand hotel in downtown Manhattan.

The arrest in New York was not his first run-in with the law this year. In February, Pool was arrested for fourth-degree assault in Seattle, Washington, a spokesperson for SPD confirmed.

The Kennedy campaign and Pool did not respond to immediate requests for comment.

Now where are all those “experts” who claimed that putting the Tangerine Traitor on trial would rally his followers….

CNN: Truth Social keeps shrinking despite the Trump trial and looming election

New York CNN — Former President Donald Trump hit the jackpot this spring when his social media company finally went public. Even though Trump Media & Technology Group (DJT) generates very little revenue, investors are assigning an eye-popping valuation north of $9 billion to the company. Trump’s dominant stake in Trump Media is now valued at nearly $6 billion.

Yet new data shows its main product — the conservative-friendly social network Truth Social — remains a very tiny player in its industry, and it’s getting even smaller. Truth Social’s average number of daily active US users on iOS and Android dropped by 19% year over year in April to about 113,000, according to data shared exclusively with CNN from Similarweb, a data intelligence company.

The Similarweb data, which captures the first 29 days of April, showed that the average number of users dipped 4% month over month. That drop comes despite the considerable attention received by the ongoing Trump criminal trial and the growing focus on the US presidential election.

If the woman proceeded with the abortion, even in a state where the procedure remains legal, Davis would seek a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the abortion and “pursue wrongful-death claims against anyone involved in the killing of his unborn child,” the lawyer wrote in a letter, according to records.

Now, Davis has disclosed his former partner’s abortion to a state district court in Texas, asking for the power to investigate what his lawyer characterizes as potentially illegal activity in a state where almost all abortions are banned.

No way. Everyone knows these people have our best interests at heart!

The irony is that with the rise of EVs (already approaching 50% of the overall car market in China) the world is basically one oil crisis away from ditching gasoline en mass,.. and oil companies know it.

IMO the only reason why gasoline is not currently above $7/gallon from current world events is that raising oil prices will mean much more rapid adoption of EVs. Just think what happened in decades past as even one little blip in the Persian Gulf arena would send prices rocketing upwards. The oil industry plan now is to manage the calculus of keeping oil prices at this level for as long as they can all the while keeping their propaganda campaign against EVs ongoing.

Looking forward to the 200,000 reward level. I don’t know how Charles has less than a million karma points, unless the Karma counter doesn’t go to seven figures and rolls over back to zero.

The Cult of Bike Helmets

Last year, health officials in Seattle decided to stop requiring bicyclists to wear helmets. Independent research found that nearly half of Seattle’s helmet tickets in recent years went to unhoused people, while Black and Native American cyclists in the city were four times and two times more likely, respectively, than white cyclists to be cited.

Whether people should wear helmets was not the motivation behind the repeal, King County Councilmember Girmay Zahilay said at the time. “The question is whether a helmet law that is enforced by police, on balance, produces results that outweigh the harms the law creates.” For lawmakers, the answer was clear: The potential benefits of a helmet mandate were not worth the harms it did to marginalized Seattle residents.

But some local bike advocates argued that there was a second advantage: Repealing the law could make riding more safe. Helmet mandates intimidate potential riders, they argued, by framing cycling as an activity so dangerous it necessitates body armor. That, in turn, can suppress ridership, and take away the safety benefits of riding in numbers. The more bicyclists take up space on the road, the more visible they become to drivers. And as cars more regularly contend with bikes, the more consideration bikes will get in conversations about transit safety and road infrastructure.

Other jurisdictions have done away with their helmet mandates too: In 2020 Tacoma, Washington, repealed its requirement; in 2014 Dallas did the same for adults. These repeals push back at the notion that bike safety starts and ends with helmets and suggest that helmet laws might actually pose a risk to cyclists. Now some avid cyclists are going so far as to loudly proclaim forgoing helmets on principle.

Sinking of MV Conception
Horrifying story. All 33 passengers and 1 crewmember were killed when they were trapped on the lower deck. Fire had spread completely across the upper deck, blocking all exits. 5 crewmembers, all of whom were in the pilothouse, survived. Incidentally, the now disgraced captain was first to leave the burning boat. This is not illegal but it is a shameful violation of tradition and professional ethics.

Instead of confronting the discriminatory policing and the hard work behind the need to fix/reform law enforcement, they decided to repeal a law that enhances safety for cyclists.

Instead of confronting aggressive motor vehicle drivers who ignore their responsibility to drive safely and to accord cyclists room on the road, they decided to repeal a law that enhances safety for cyclists.

Instead of confronting roadway design that puts cyclists at risk by having them share road space with motor vehicles that travel at higher than permitted speeds, they decided to repeal a law that enhances safety for cyclists.

Helmets work to keep cyclists safe. They locality has done an insufficient job of making it even safer by fixing the aforementioned problems, and therefore decided that the helmet law was not good in some fashion, despite no actual empirical evidence suggesting that the helmets aren’t making it safer for cyclists.

I can’t recall where I heard this, but it was suggested that the Trump criminal trial is going to take longer than it otherwise should because Trump refused to let his lawyers stipulate to certain facts, instead requiring prosecutors enter them into the record through witnesses and corroboration.

It certainly is a strategy, but not one that will work with much success. If he’s trying to get the jurors to snooze off, he’s not doing a good job. Prosecutors are making their case, and Trump’s lawyers aren’t introducing reasonable doubt (their only job - they don’t have to prove anything, just that there’s reasonable doubt as to his guilt).

The Venn Diagram of people who wouldn’t mask and people who won’t wear helmets has to be close to a perfect circle.

“Helmet mandates intimidate potential riders, they argued, by framing cycling as an activity so dangerous it necessitates body armor.”

I’m sorry to tell you, but riding is so inherently dangerous that it necessitates body armor. A slow speed fall on pavement could easily cause a skull fracture. And it is insane to me that people would be intimidated at the prospect of wearing a helmet, but somehow not intimidated by riding a bike at 15+ mph, particularly with cars, other bikes, or people in close proximity. I rarely ride without a helmet. I don’t ever allow my son to ride without his.

It’s even worse than that, since lab grown meat will actually be meat, as opposed to vegetables based meat substitute.

re: #276 Florida Panhandler

6.5 year EV owner here. No regrets, it’s been great. However, I’m lucky enough to have a home where I could install my own Level 2 charger. I think that’s still a big drawback to EV ownership if you’re in an apartment or townhouse, or somewhere where you can’t conveniently charge at home.

Based on my last car’s mileage (30 MPG, give or take), electricity has been anywhere from 30% to 50% cheaper than gas, depending on gas prices and weather. That might worry Big Oil, but I’m skeptical that they would be worried enough to leave money on the table by keeping prices lower.

$7.00/gallon is the current gas price here in Czech Republic (when you factor in standard to metric and currency conversion) and Czechs absolutely loathe EVs.

I attribute a lot of that to the fact that in my neck of the woods, 70% of the population live in apartment units with simply no way to charge an EV. Also, there’s about 300,000+ cars here, and we have a grand total of 15 public charging stations.

The government, both regional and national, doesn’t have the money to rebuild an antiquated electrical infrastructure (most of it dating from the Cold War era) and expand said infrastructure.

Oil is a physical global commodity. Prices are dictated by supply and demand. Gasoline supply is also affected by refining capacity.

Most of the new demand growth is from India and China.
The US is now the biggest oil producer by far, and US producers can spin up new capacity fairly quickly if prices go higher (more wells become economically viable). Opec has lost a lot of its pricing power.
The move to EVs is also having an effect, but IMHO the biggest difference maker is US shale.

How much of that $7 is taxes? Most of Europe has relatively high gasoline prices due to taxes.

That is just a prelude to a National Abortion Ban under which all women of childbearing age will be subject to medical examination upon leaving or re-entering the country.

Yeah, that will work just fine. I could see a late 30s, early 40s Texas woman who carries a pink pistol in her purse pulling it out and shooting any person who suggests that she needs a medical examination to ensure she’s not pregnant. Or a Texas mom of the same age doing the same thing when it’s her teenage daughter threatened with a medical exam.

They may not be Democrats (probably aren’t) but some women are just not going to put up with this shit.

It is, yet I think I can say that Hamas is utterly and insanely evil, and that the IDF shooting two children in the back yesterday (age 14 and 8) in the West Bank because the soldiers were basically bored is also some really evil shit (as well as deliberate targeting of academics, journalists and their extended families with precision munitions), and the settler movement being described as the local version of the KKK seems apt, the Palestinian Authority is hapless and corrupt AND that is also by design from Netanyahu as a measure of control. Oh and Hezbollah are genocidal nuts too. Fuck Iran for good measure.

The persistent invocation of Amalekites as Palestinians fucking terrifies me, because this is genocidal imagery and reinforces my own perception as an outsider that this has become a bronze age blood feud to the death with 21st century weapons.

And in that event, why are we arming anybody involved? It’s a horror show. It’s bloodlust insanity and we can’t reason with either party (unless Hamas leadership is out of the picture, or Netanyahu and his batshit insane ministers are voted out)

I want nothing to do with any of it at this point.

I love also the play to his cult base, referring to his “beautiful blue eyes,” clearly hoping the people who are enamored with him as a messiah-like figure will latch on to the mental image and sweep aside the idea that he’s a fat old man who can’t stay awake in a criminal courtroom (probably because of undiagnosed sleep apnea, if he’s as heavyset as we all think he is).

I am the same age as Trump and have long taken the opportunity to nap during the day; when in my 30’s, I was infamous for napping during the first act of operas, at least until they finally had supertitles so it was possible to know what has happening. But when old, you don’t need special health issues to nap — just being bored and insufficiently caffeinated helps.

It’s his ego talking. “How DARE that judge tell me what I can and can’t say?! DOESN’T HE KNOW WHO I AM?!!” This is a man who is used to using his money and power (perceived and real) to intimidate others into doing his bidding. To have someone else tell him to STFU or else he’ll face penalties goes against everything that his father taught him about what his wealth afforded him.

Don’t drive on the fookin beach.

I don’t know who thought this was a good idea, but a Cybertruck is a fucking heavy beast, and those tires are not up to the task of distributing that heavy load in such a way as to let it drive in sand.

A truck that can’t cross basic obstacles, can’t carry a decent load of cargo, is easily tarnished, and yet can’t be washed without first engaging a special mode lest it be irreparably damaged.

Oh yeah, Elmo definitely ticked all the boxes for what an American consumer imagines when they think of a pick-up truck./////

In general, driving on sand is like driving on, well, thin ice. You’ll be fine, until you aren’t. Sand is such a sketchy composition to drive on, depending on the time of day, the phase of the moon (no, literally; the tide can affect the water level and thus the solidity of the sand), the weather, etc. I’m leery of driving in sand, even in a much lighter vehicle that should theoretically have fewer problems.

Yeah, the image brought to mind Jeremy Clarkson spending most of an episode of Top Gear trying (and failing) to kill an 80s-era Toyota Hilux. Including taking it seaside and chaining it up to be submerged by the incoming tide, losing it for hours after the chains broke and the ocean claimed it for a bit, then being absolutely amazed as a few mechanics got it running again with only the contents of an ordinary toolbox.

I suspect anything other than parking the damned thing on a plinth in a hermetically-sealed showroom and lovingly pampering it for several hours every day voids the warranty.

But considering the company’s current trajectory, that warranty probably won’t be much good for much longer.

re: #438 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

The question I still have about all this is: was it intentionally ruined?

I deeply believe in the dictum: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

But also: Any sufficiently advanced stupidity is indistinguishable from malice.

So I have no idea. Does Musk genuinely intend to make Twitter into a 4chan clone, or is he just an absolute idiot, stumbling from one terrible idea to the next in a ketamine fog?

I realize both can be true in equal or varying degrees, but I’m really curious.

It’s malice because stupidity would be more random. Instead, everything Musk does consistently enables Nazis.

carpenter bee living in the rail of my balcony. I only know because I thought he was just a standard bumble bee but then he flew over to the railing and disappeared inside a suspiciously perfect round hole. He’s a carpenter bee who does really excellent work. And doesn’t seem to be particular aggressive. I’ve had to shoe him out of the apartment a couple of times, not because I was nervous around him, but because it’s like having a weedeater crank up a couple of feet away, and I’m working in here.

That exact same thing happened to me two days ago. Damn carpenter bee sounded like a gas powered Weed Wacker. Either he found his way out or died. He was so big that if he died I’m going to stay smelling dead body decay here shortly.
